Introducing SHAP: The Safe Homes Access Program Subsidy
A Community-Driven Effort to Protect Every Canadian Home With Advanced Firearm Safety Technology, Affordably and Equitably.
At the National Firearm Safety Initiative (NFSI), we believe that safety should never depend on income. Every Canadian family from big cities to rural towns deserves the peace of mind that comes with knowing their firearms are secure, their children are safe, and their community is protected.
That’s why we’re proud to launch the Safe Homes Access Program (SHAP) a first-of-its-kind national initiative that provides free ARUD (Arms Recovery Unit Device) systems and one year of IoT connectivity to qualifying low-income households across Canada.
What is SHAP?
SHAP is a community-powered access program that helps licensed firearm owners safeguard their homes using smart, proactive security technology.
Through SHAP, eligible families receive an ARUD device, a small, tamper-aware monitoring system that detects unauthorized movement, theft, or misuse of a firearm and instantly sends an alert to the owner’s phone.
Each unit includes a 12-month IoT plan, ensuring real-time notifications, GPS tracking, and secure data logging, completely free of charge for those who qualify.
Why It Matters
Every year, firearms are stolen, misused, or accessed by the wrong hands often with tragic results. Many of these incidents occur in homes that follow every safety rule but lack the means to invest in modern protection systems.
SHAP bridges that gap by ensuring that financial barriers never prevent responsible ownership.
By empowering households to protect what matters most, we strengthen not only individual homes but the entire community around them.
How (SHAP) Benefits All Canadians
Prevents firearm thefts and illegal resale.
Reduces suicides and accidental deaths.
Can Support emergency responders with real-time data.
Respects firearm owners’ rights and privacy.
Fosters equality in safety across Canada.
